The UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report released on Sunday Oct 7th, expressed a need for urgency on the state of global warming. The good news if we can get it together and stop spewing emissions we will have better air quality, more jobs and a more evolved economic system that prospers from restorative practices that also protect our atmosphere. To keep global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, the optimistic goal set out in the Paris Agreement, we will not only have to accept the laws of the physical universe but respond to them and do so immediately. A 1.5 degree increase may be just around the corner and the effects of this are already being felt globally.

Cutting our emissions by half before 2030, to correct course and avoid 1.5 C, or 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit, we’ll indeed mean big change but the change toward a carbon-neutral 2050, creates a robust inclusive economy. This is an opportunity to fix the underlying issues of unsustainable practices that create a poverty for people, planet and spirit. The industrial revolution was another time of big change and created wealth for a few and had little regard for inclusive principles that include natures value. The current clean energy revolution and restorative economy will not only clean up the mess of the fossilize thinking of the industrial revolution it could create wealth for many including the plants and animals, that also live here with us. This Clean energy boom could also evolve the system and make a hardier more robust, less depleted planet. It could put systemic thinking and bio-mimicry at its core. We are creating an economy that is greener, safer, more elegant and more systemically stable. Consider climate action a gift to you and to future generations and then get to work on making that world a reality. We have three decades to transform our energy production into something cleaner, safer and renewable. No more fossilized thinking burning fossil fuel. Yesterdays sunlight can stay in the ground. We can use fresh sunlight, and grow a clean energy economy faster than summer tomatoes. Clean energy galore is at our door. Everything we do to mitigate warming will have some benefit, and it’s worth every fraction of a degree because each of those steps improves your health and the health of others today. To create a best-case scenario we will need big changes to the world as we know it but this is an opportunity to envision an abundant, inclusive economy that is healthier for all, is very exciting.
