Solar Powered Schools

Horicon Elementary School is a rural, one school district in the northwest corner of Sonoma County, California. The district is one of the largest geographically in the state and includes the coastal community of the Sea Ranch and Stewarts Point to the west; Annapolis and east along Skaggs Springs Road. Horicon has a K-8th population of 61 students who are recieving a special education in stewardship. Solarcraft installed their 59 kW DC system in 2015. The photo-voltaic system offsets 99% of their utility grid demand, essentially eliminating their electric bills and saving the school district thousands in utility fees every year.

They also have a fresh fruit & vegetable program that includes a garden and compost for student participation. In addition to the garden, Horicon School is part of the Federal Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program which offers all students a morning snack of seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables. They hope to educate children on the variety and options available to them for their daily snacks and meals. Fruit and vegetables are another way to celebrate the power of the sun.
